About Pensacola.
Pensacola, located just about a mile off the Gulf Coast in the panhandle of Florida, is vulnerable to both direct and indirect hurricane impacts. Due to its coastal proximity, storm surges are a primary concern, which, when paired with heavy rainfalls, can lead to severe flooding. The elevation level of Pensacola is relatively low, with much of the city lying less than 25 feet above sea level, increasing its flood risk. Infrastructure damage from tropical storm-force winds is also a concern, as is the risk of tornadoes in the peripherals of a passing or approaching hurricane. Pensacola has a known history of powerful hurricanes and flooding events in the last 30 years. Notably, Hurricane Ivan in 2004 caused significant damage to roads, bridges, and buildings, and led to serious flooding. Just recently in 2020, Hurricane Sally also led to severe flooding and a considerable amount of structural damage in Pensacola. These historical events highlight Pensacola's consistent vulnerability to hurricanes and floods, which reinforces the need for residents and local officials to always be prepared and have comprehensive plans in place during the hurricane season.
