About Port St. John.
Port St. John, Florida, located near the Eastern coast and straddling the Indian River, faces a significant threat from hurricanes and related storm surges. Its geographical proximity to the Atlantic Ocean means tropical cyclones can reach it directly, while its relatively low elevation exposes it to the risk of flooding from excessive rainfall and storm surges. Being part of Brevard County, which is classified by FEMA as a high-risk flood zone, adds to this concern. The town's resources and infrastructure, ranging from housing and road networks to power grid, all could suffer direct or indirect damages from hurricanes. Historically, the town has been hit by a number of big hurricanes over the past three decades. Notably, in 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne made landfall in the East Coast of Central Florida, causing severe storm surge, wind damage, and flooding. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew also caused significant damages along the coast. That was followed by Hurricane Irma in 2017, which resulted in heavy torrential rain and a significant number of power outages in the town. Future storms could follow these patterns, and Port St. John residents should prepare for extreme wind, considerable rain, and possible prolonged utility outages.
