About Jacksonville Beach.
Jacksonville Beach, Florida, located directly on the eastern coastline of the state, is highly susceptible to the threats posed by hurricanes, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, storm surges, and flooding. Its low-lying topography and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean make it particularly vulnerable to storm surges, which can create significant flooding. Additionally, the potential for high rainfall levels during a hurricane can further exacerbate flood risks due to overburdened drainage systems. Physical damage from high winds is also a concern, as building structures, trees, and power lines may be damaged or toppled, possibly leading to power outages. Looking at historical data, Jacksonville Beach has experienced major impacts from several hurricanes over the past three decades. The most catastrophic event was Hurricane Dorian in 2019, which, while it did not make landfall, brought strong winds, heavy rain, and substantial coastal flooding to the region. Prior to that, Hurricane Irma in 2017, made landfall in Florida and its wide swath impacted Jacksonville Beach with torrential rains and storm surge causing serious flooding. Another significant storm was Hurricane Floyd in 1999; while it did not hit directly, it skirted the coast and caused major flooding. All these previous events remind us of the crucial need for comprehensive hurricane preparedness and response plans in Jacksonville Beach.
