Indian Harbour Beach, located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon, has an elevation of roughly only 10 feet. This makes it extremely vulnerable to storm surge flooding during a potential hurricane event. The town’s proximity to the coast, along with low elevations, significantly heightens its risk of both coastal and inland flooding due to heavy rainfall. Moreover, the barrier island geography exacerbates the risk of isolation from emergency services and supplies if a hurricane were to hit, as there are limited evacuation routes. Examining the historical context, in the last 30 years, Indian Harbour Beach has been hit by several significant hurricanes. Some examples include Hurricane Frances in 2004, which brought heavy rainfall, and Hurricane Irma in 2017, one of the costliest hurricanes in Florida's history, causing significant damage. Although for Irma, the majority of the damage was due to wind and not primarily flooding. However, considering climate change and sea level rise, future storms could bring exacerbated flood risks in comparison to past events. Thus, it is critical for residents and local authorities to stay alert to weather updates and have well-planned evacuation routes and disaster plans in place.
