West Miami, Florida, although not directly on the coast, still faces significant hurricane threats due to its low-lying elevation and its proximity to the coast. Historically, this area has been prone to severe flooding during major hurricanes, due to its flat topography and poor drainage systems. Even a slow-moving, less-powerful storm can cause significant rain accumulation, leading to wide-spread flooding. The local infrastructure can be substantially impacted, endangering residences and causing significant road closures and power outages. Storm surges proved deadly on the coast and the potential for inland waterway flood is also considerable due to overflow from the Miami River. In the past 30 years, there have been several significant storms affecting the West Miami area, the most destructive of which was Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Constantly meriting note, Andrew resulted in immense wind damage and flooding within the community. More recently, Hurricane Irma in 2017 demonstrated that even when a hurricane doesn't make direct landfall in the area, the peripheral impacts can still be significant, resulting in substantial precipitation and wind damage. These historical events illustrate the need for comprehensive preparation measures to mitigate the risks and potential impacts from powerful storm systems in the West Miami area.
