Siesta Key, Florida is particularly vulnerable to hurricane threats given its location directly on the Gulf Coast and its relatively low elevation. The island's topography, along with its coastal barrier characterization, makes it prone to storm surge, a top killer during hurricanes. Historically, the area has experienced significant flooding due to major storm events, due in large part to storm surge and torrential rainfall associated with these systems. The lack of any significant elevation on Siesta Key restricts the natural runoff of floodwater, thus exacerbating the flooding situation in residential and commercial areas during severe storms. Over the last three decades, Siesta Key has experienced several significant hurricanes and flooding events. The most notable of these storms in recent history was Hurricane Irma in 2017, which although did not directly make landfall in Siesta Key, the storm surge and high winds caused significant damage. Prior to that, in 2004, Hurricane Charley, despite making landfall over 100 miles to the south, caused considerable damage to homes and infrastructure, and led to considerable beach erosion. Additionally, the potential for hurricanes to cause widespread power outages and disrupt water and sewage services is an ever-present risk. Therefore, appropriate planning and preparation remain critical for residents and business owners on Siesta Key.
