Inland regions can often meet heavy precipitation from dissipating tropical storms or hurricanes, which can lead to flooding, particularly if the soil is already saturated. The Plains, being set at a higher elevation, doesn't typically confront severe flooding issues; however, the belts of lower elevation land surrounding it can become inundated during heavy rain events, blocking access routes into and out of the town. Furthermore, heavy winds can down trees and power lines, leading to power outages and potential property damage. Historically, The Plains has not suffered extensively from hurricane-associated impacts. However, the broader region has had a history of tropical storms and hurricanes making their presence felt. Most notably, Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and Hurricane Floyd in 1999 brought high winds and heavy rains to Northern Virginia, causing extensive flooding and power outages. And while the remnant storm from Hurricane Camille in 1969 didn't directly hit The Plains, it did cause devastating flooding in Virginia. With the frequency of extreme weather events somewhat rising with climate change, vigilance—and adequate planning and preparation—remains prudent.
