About El Portal.
El Portal, Florida, although located some miles inland from both the Atlantic Coast and Biscayne Bay, stands incredibly susceptible to heavy wind damage and flooding from hurricanes. Situated at a mere 10 feet above sea level, it's prone to incurring serious damages from storm surges, especially amid hurricanes. Noteworthy to highlight is its proximity to the Little River, where rising water levels during hurricanes present an imminent risk for severe flooding. These factors, combined with the town's mature tree canopy, significantly increase potential for damage due to falling trees and high winds. The town has experienced severe weather incidents in the past that caused substantial damage. Notably, in 1992, Hurricanes Andrew hit the region with category 5 storm winds resulting in massive loss and devastation. More recently, in 2005, El Portal was struck by Hurricane Wilma, a Category 3 hurricane, causing widespread power outages, downed trees, and structural damages. It is essential for El Portal to remain vigilant during the hurricane season from June through November, adopt effective preventive measures, and ensure the readiness of both its infrastructure and the community.
