About Westlake.
Westlake, Florida has a relatively low vulnerability to hurricanes when compared to coastal Florida cities, largely due to its inland location. As it is situated nearly 15 miles inland from the eastern coast and also from Lake Okeechobee to its west, Westlake is not directly exposed to major storm surge risks, a primary damaging factor connected to coastal hurricanes. However, the proximity to the lake can heighten the risk for localized flooding because of heavy rainfall during hurricane events. The town's elevation, ranging from 10 to 30 feet, being modest protects it from severe flooding. It is also important to note that high-intensity winds can still be a significant concern, causing structural damage to properties. Historically, Westlake has experienced adverse effects from major hurricanes, albeit not as severely as its coastal neighbors. Most notably, in 2005, Hurricane Wilma swept through South Florida, causing extensive wind damage in Westlake. Also, in 2017, Hurricane Irma's wide radius of impact resulted in high winds and abundant rainfall in the area, demonstrating the town's susceptibility to hurricanes, despite being inland. Consequently, the major consideration for Westlake during hurricane season is potential wind damage and heavy rainfall leading to localized flooding. Therefore, it will be crucial for residents and business owners to secure properties and have strategies in place for excessive rainwater.
