About Atlantis.
Atlantis, Florida faces considerable risk during the hurricane season due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the frequency of weather systems that traverse the southern part of the state. The town's location in Palm Beach County, approximately six miles west of the Atlantic Ocean, leaves it susceptible to both the wind and storm surge threats related to hurricanes. Its relatively lower elevation, with the average being 16 feet above sea level, amplifies the threat of flooding both from heavy rainfall and potential storm surges from hurricanes making landfall nearby. Over the past 30 years, several significant hurricanes have directly affected Atlantis. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 caused significant damage in South Florida, including Atlantis. More recently, hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004, and Wilma in 2005 brought strong winds, heavy rains and lead to extensive property damage and flooding in the region. Another factor that Atlantis needs to consider is the potential for tornadoes, which are common during a hurricane's passage. Given its history, residents of Atlantis should be aware and prepared for the substantial risk posed by hurricanes and associated weather phenomena.
