About Lauderdale Lakes.
Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, is located approximately six miles inland from the Atlantic coastline, and therefore, this area is relatively less prone to direct storm surge damage compared to the coastal cities of Florida. However, the city, with an average elevation of only nine feet above sea level, is susceptible to inland flooding brought on by heavy rainfall from tropical systems. Lauderdale Lakes is located in Broward County, which has been known to experience significant rainfall induced flooding from hurricanes. Plus, due to the flat typography, water generally takes longer to drain off, which can exaggerate the flooding situation. Historically, multiple hurricanes have impacted Lauderdale Lakes, noteworthy ones being Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Andrew, a Category 5 storm, mainly ravaged south of the city, but it served as a wake-up call for Broward County about the potential severity of hurricanes. Wilma, on the other hand, is remembered for causing widespread wind damage across Broward County, including Lauderdale Lakes. The city experienced power outages and property damages. Other minor but still significant impacts came from Hurricanes Katrina and Irma, with both systems presenting flooding issues that affected the city's infrastructure and residential areas. Though Lauderdale Lakes is not a coastal city, local authorities and residents should remain vigilant, especially in view of the increased intensity of hurricanes due to climate change.
