Callahan, Florida, is situated approximately 18 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, which puts it at a somewhat lower risk for direct hurricane impact when compared to coastal cities. However, it's still within a region that historically experiences impacts from tropical storms and hurricanes. The town's relatively low elevation (around 59 feet above sea level) and flat terrain could potentially exacerbate flooding conditions during heavy rain events often associated with such storms. Its geographic location also exposes it to potential threats from tornadoes that can form in the outer rain bands of a hurricane.
Over the past 30 years, several major hurricanes have impacted Northeast Florida, including Hurricanes Andrew (1992), Floyd (1999), and more recently, Irma (2017). While Andrew caused a significant amount of widespread destruction, Floyd resulted in considerable flooding across the region, setting a precedent for future flood concerns. Hurricane Irma also affected the region significantly, causing notable inland flooding. Though being inland provides some protection from storm surge for Callahan, the town should still remain prepared for the high wind speeds, heavy rainfall, and resulting flooding that hurricanes typically bring to the area.
