§ 02

About Bristol.

Local context for the zone
Bristol, Florida, as with most areas within the Florida Panhandle, has a significant threat from hurricanes as it is located approximately 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The area, predominantly flat due to its low elevation of around 75 feet, makes it particularly susceptible to flooding. Torrential rains, which often accompany hurricanes or even tropical storms, can result in substantial, sometimes even catastrophic, flash floods. Given its proximity to the coast, it also faces the risk of storm surges despite being inland which can result in flood hazards. Historically, Bristol has been impacted by several major hurricanes and floods over the last 30 years. Notably, in 2018, Hurricane Michael, a powerful Category 5 hurricane, hit the Florida Panhandle causing widespread damage with its high-speed winds and heavy rainfall. The infamous 1994 Tropical Storm Alberto also resulted in significant flood damage. Although Bristol is slightly distanced from the direct coastal impact, the area must still seriously consider and prepare for the risks associated with hurricanes, including damage from high-velocity winds, flooding due to heavy rain and storm surge, and the potential displacement of its residents.
