About Cooper City.
Cooper City, Florida, is situated inland and to the southeast of the Florida peninsula, approximately 15 miles from the coast. This distance does afford it a degree of protection from the surf, storm surge and saltwater intrusion damage associated with coastal hurricanes. However, Cooper City is low-lying, ranging from 4 to 10 feet in elevation, making it prone to freshwater flooding from heavy rain bands that hurricanes can bring. As a hurricane progresses inland, it loses power, but can still bring torrential rain and strong winds, both of which can cause considerable damage. Flash flooding poses a particular risk, both due to the town’s low elevation and high water table. Cooper City has previously been affected by major hurricanes. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 passed close to this area, causing extensive damage. More recently, Hurricanes Wilma in 2005 and Irma in 2017 also had significant impacts on Cooper City. The most common impact from these events was wind damage and flooding, both from the heavy rain and from backed-up storm water systems. Given these historical impacts, residents should prepare for potentially similar conditions during future storm events.
