Pine Lakes, Florida, although not a coastal town, remains vulnerable to hurricane threats on account of its relatively low elevation and its proximity to the East Coast. The risk profile comprises a mix of high winds, tornadoes, heavy and prolonged torrential rain leading up to flash floods or prolonged flooding. Being approximately 35 miles from the coast, the town would have a lesser impact from storm surges but the primary risk would stem from the overflow of lakes, rivers, and stormwater systems from the heavy downpour. Given Florida's flat topography and the town's low elevation, water draining out is generally slow, exacerbating the flood risk. Historically, Pine Lakes has had brushes with severe weather events, although the impacts from major hurricanes have been comparatively lower, thanks to its distance from the coast. The notorious Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and the more recent hurricanes like Irma in 2017 and Dorian in 2019 have passed near the region, bringing heavy rains and high-speed winds but Pine Lakes was spared from the worst of these storms. However, these instances remind us that the risk exists and can't be overlooked. Being prepared for possible power outages, road blockages, damage to buildings particularly older and mobile homes, and displaced wildlife arising from such hurricanes should be a part of the town's disaster management planning.
