About Black Diamond.
Black Diamond, Florida, while not directly on the coastline, still poses a substantial risk for impacts from tropical storm systems and hurricanes. Situated in Citrus County, about 20 miles from the Gulf coast, hurricanes pose a significant threat in the form of extreme wind and heavy rainfall leading to flooding. In terms of elevation, most of the Black Diamond region is less than 50 feet above sea level, which makes it susceptible to flood conditions, especially considering the area's well-documented history of flooding. Within the past 30 years, Black Diamond has been hit or significantly influenced by several major hurricanes and tropical storms, including the costly and destructive Hurricane Hermine in 2016, which resulted in flooding and extensive damage in several parts of Citrus County. Additionally, the region experienced significant rainfall and flooding from hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004. Furthermore, although Hurricane Irma in 2017 primarily affected southern Florida, areas within Citrus County faced heavy rainfall and wind damages. Future potentially significant impacts can include high-speed winds causing structural damage, torrential downpours leading to floods, and the increased likelihood of tornadoes.
