About Waldo.
Waldo, Florida, while not a coastal town, still holds a significant risk for hurricane threats due to its location in a hurricane-prone state. Although Waldo is approximately 75 miles from the coast, hurricanes can cover large areas and bring destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and tornadoes that extend well inland. It stands at a relatively low elevation, averaging about 75 feet above sea level, which could heighten flood risks, especially during a hurricane when rainwater doesn't have an easy route for draining. Fortunately, Waldo has not suffered a direct hit from a major hurricane in the past 30 years. However, it has been impacted by several notable tropical systems, most notably Hurricane Irma in 2017 which caused torrential rainfall and subsequent flooding in the area. Additionally, when looking a bit further back, Hurricane Easy in 1950 and the unnamed 1947 Fort Lauderdale hurricane both caused significant flood damage in Waldo. Therefore, Waldo residents should remain vigilant and regularly monitor weather forecasts during hurricane season, ensuring their safety measures are ready in case of potential risks. Emergency preparation, such as securing of loose outdoor objects, preparing an emergency kit, and having an evacuation plan, is highly advised.
