About Winter Haven.
Winter Haven, Florida, located in the heart of the state, is at a reasonable distance from the coastline, which provides it with some protection against direct hurricane impacts. However, due to its low-lying elevation, primarily between 130 to 150 feet above sea level, the city is susceptible to heavy rainfall that hurricanes drop inland. This increase in rainfall can lead to a high flood risk, as has been the case historically. Additionally, high winds, usually associated with hurricanes, could cause substantial damage to structures and infrastructure. Within the past 30 years, Winter Haven has experienced impacts from major hurricanes such as Charley in 2004, Irma in 2017, and Jeanne in 2004. Hurricane Charley, a Category 4 storm, crossed through Winter Haven causing significant wind-related damage. Hurricane Irma resulted in widespread power outages, downed trees and caused flooding in the area. Hurricane Jeanne also resulted in flooding due to the excessive rainfall. Winter Haven, despite its inland location, still requires robust hurricane and flood-guided city planning due to these potential threats. Being prepared for such storms can assist in reducing the potential impact.
