Babson Park, Florida, is situated in Polk county and while it is not directly on the coast, it isn't immune to the impacts of hurricanes. Being approximately 60 miles from both the eastern and western coasts of Florida, tropical systems, particularly hurricanes, can wreak havoc with high winds, heavy rain, and the potential for tornadoes. Its inland location, however, does often help shield it from the most devastating storm surge impacts that coastal areas can face. Babson Park's elevation varies between 90 and 160 feet which further diminishes the risk of severe flooding, but localized flooding, especially with slow-moving or stalled storm systems, can still be a concern depending on the specific circumstances of a storm. Over the past 30 years, hurricanes that have notably impacted Babson Park include 2004's trio of hurricanes, Charley, Frances, and Jeanne, as well as Hurricane Irma in 2017. All these hurricanes passed close to the town, delivering strong winds and significant precipitation. From a flood risk perspective, Babson Park experienced significant rainfall during the 2004 hurricanes, leading to isolated flooding events. Hurricane Irma also resulted in notable wind damage in and around the community. All considered, while Babson Park's distance from the coast and slightly elevated topography have spared it from the worst of many hurricanes, residents should still understand the very real risks hurricanes can pose and prepare accordingly.
