Five Points, Florida, being situated around 50 miles from Florida's east coast, is relatively shielded from the direct impacts of a landfalling hurricane. These impacts typically include storm surge, which is a non-factor for Five Points due to its distance from the coast. However, considerable risks still persist from other hurricane-related impacts such as strong winds, heavy rain, and potential tornadoes. High rainfall totals can lead to both flash and riverine flooding, which could affect the town considering Florida's somewhat flat topography. Over the past 30 years, Five Points has experienced hurricanes that brought significant rainfall and flooding to the area, most notably Hurricane Irma in 2017 which caused widespread rainfall-induced flooding across the state. In 2004, Florida experienced an unusually active hurricane season, with the closest hit to Five Points being Hurricane Jeanne. This caused extended periods of heavy rain and subsequent flooding. However, the greatest risk to Five Points from hurricanes remains strong winds, given the town's reasonable distance from the coast but within reach of the storm's wind field. These winds can cause damage to infrastructure, knock down trees and power lines, and cause power outages. Consequently, residents should realize that even though they are not at risk from storm surge, other aspects of hurricanes can be just as hazardous.
