Medley, Florida, although somewhat distanced from the coastline, is still vulnerable to the impacts of hurricanes, mainly due to its low elevation, extensive canal system, and proximity to Lake Okeechobee. The township is situate at an average elevation of only 7 feet, which leaves it prone to significant storm surge and flooding, especially in a hurricane situation. Compounding this is the fact that Medley, like much of South Florida, is crisscrossed by numerous canals which can overflow during heavy rainfall. The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane resulted in catastrophic damage and flooding, and while measures have been taken to reduce the flooding risk from the lake, it remains a potential threat. In the last 30 years, Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and hurricanes Wilma and Katrina in 2005, have been major storms impacting Medley. These storms have resulted in significant wind and flood damage, with areas of the town under several feet of water for extended periods. Furthermore, given climate change considerations, hurricanes can more frequently reach high intensities, and increased rainfall rates may lead to a higher risk of flooding. Mandatory evacuation orders are typically issued for areas at risk of storm surge, but residents should also be prepared for extended periods without power and the potential for wind damage to homes and structures.
