About Lake Kathryn.
Lake Kathryn, Florida, is somewhat protected from direct hurricane impacts given its inland position in Lake County, about 45 miles from both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. However, being inland does not fully immunize this area from the secondary impacts of hurricanes, including strong winds, heavy rain, and potential tornadoes spawned by the cyclone. Lake Kathryn's very low elevation, with much of the area 75 feet or less above sea level, could enhance flooding risk during periods of prolonged heavy rainfall. Flooding in the past has been a serious concern in the town and in the wider Lake County. Looking at historical hurricane data, Hurricane Charley in 2004 was a major weather event that had a profound impact on the Lake Katheryn area. The category 4 hurricane, although it did not make landfall directly near Lake Kathryn, brought destructive winds and significant rainfall to the region. Also, Tropical Storm Fay in 2008 led to considerable flooding in Lake County. With climate change, there is potential for increased hurricane intensity and rainfall rates, which could exacerbate flood risk in the Lake Kathryn region. Therefore, hurricane preparedness and understanding historical patterns is essential for residents in this area.
