Crystal Springs, Florida, is situated in the central part of the state, which places it some distance away from the coastline. The inland location of the town does offer initial shielding from direct hits by hurricanes. Over time, hurricane cyclones tend to break apart and weaken once they make landfall. Despite this, the heavy rainfall associated with these meteorological phenomena can be a significant risk, particularly if a slow-moving or stalled storm system occurs. Crystal Springs is relatively flat in relation to sea level, a topographic trait shared by much of Florida. This flatness can exacerbate flooding concerns as water doesn't readily drain away. Historically, Florida's interior has experienced severe flooding from hurricanes including Hermine in 2016, Frances in 2004, and Floyd in 1999. These hurricanes demonstrate the fact that being located inland does not fully isolate a locality from the impacts of such weather systems. Historically, Crystal Springs has been affected by multiple floods and hurricanes in the past but none of them major in the past 30 years. Multitudes of tropical storms and smaller hurricanes that resulted in considerable rain have caused flooding in the area, highlighting the need for local residents to have responsive flood mitigation plans in place during hurricane season.
