Haines City, Florida, being positioned in central Florida and approximately 50 miles from both the East and West Florida coasts, is not as immediately susceptible to the surge-related flooding experienced by direct coastal cities during hurricanes. However, this does not mean the town is devoid of all hurricane-related risks. Due to Haines City's low elevation (less than 200 feet above sea level), the town can still face significant flood risks related to heavy rainfall during hurricanes and tropical storms. The rainfall intensity and duration can lead to swift accumulation of water, especially if the ground is already saturated, causing flash floods and water damage to infrastructure and residences. Looking at the historical incidents, Haines City has endured numerous tropical storm and hurricane impacts over the past 30 years. Notably, in 2004, the city faced three sizable hurricanes (Charley, Frances, and Jeanne), all of which crossed over or passed very close to the city within six weeks. These hurricanes caused considerable wind and water damage to Haines City. Hurricane Irma in 2017 was another significant hurricane that created wind damage and power outages, demonstrating that, while direct storm surge impacts may be minimized due to the city's inland location, the risks related to hurricane-induced wind damage and rainfall are of significant concern for Haines City.
