About Scottsmoor.
Scottsmoor, situated in the far north of Brevard County, Florida, is vulnerable to the hazards of hurricanes due to its proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River. Its distance from the coast is minimal, which affords little buffer against storm surge and heavy rainfall frequently associated with such storms. Although Scottsmoor, having a low average elevation, is relatively flat, the risk for flooding increases during hurricanes as water levels rise from heavy rain and potential storm surge. Additionally, such flat terrains tend to have poor drainage capabilities, leading to water accumulation and flooding in the event of high-intensity storms. Scottsmoor's infrastructure, including its roadways and residential properties, may also suffer significant damage in the advent of high wind speeds and flying debris, common fallout from hurricane events. Looking back through hurricane history, the town has witnessed several significant hurricanes over the past three decades. For instance, Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 brought considerable damage to the region due to high winds, storm surge, and massive rainfall, resulting in flooding. As a part of Brevard County, it has been impacted by several other storms as well, including Frances (2004), Charley (2004), and Floyd (1999), each delivering varied levels of impact. It's vitally important for Scottsmoor community members and local authorities to take the threat of hurricanes and resultant flooding seriously, as these hazards have historic precedence and present potential for significant damages.
