Sebastian, Florida is located right on the Atlantic coast, which significantly increases its vulnerability to hurricane impacts. Coastal towns generally are subject to the full strength of hurricanes and often have to endure harsh conditions including high wind speeds, heavy rainfall, and powerful storm surges. Sebastian is no exception to this. However, the city's elevation is slightly higher within its district, which can provide some level of protection against flooding compared to towns at sea level. But despite this, the risk of flooding still remains pertinent due to the volume of rain hurricanes can deliver. Historically, Sebastian has seen its fair share of flooding, the most significant of which took place during Hurricane Jeanne in 2004. Within the past 30 years, major hurricanes that have shown significant impacts on Sebastian include Hurricane Frances and Jeanne in 2004, which resulted in disaster declarations for Indian River County because of the extensive damage. Very recently, in 2017, Hurricane Irma also loomed as a major threat. Over time, these storms have resulted in extensive wind damage, flooding, and power outages, disrupting the socio-economic activities of the area. As more storms are predicted due to climate change, the townsfolk must be prepared for the possibilities of even more intense hurricanes and flooding events in the future.
