About Oak Ridge.
Oak Ridge, Florida, is located slightly inland in Orange County, but it is less than 20 miles from the East Coast. Despite its somewhat inland location, Oak Ridge is fairly low-lying with an average elevation of just 92 feet. This makes it potentially susceptible to flooding, particularly storm surge flooding during hurricane events when sea levels can rise considerably. Considering Florida's historical track record with hurricanes and the city's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, it's possible that a strong hurricane could bring damaging winds, torrential rains, and flooding to Oak Ridge. Analyzing weather history, Hurricane Charley in 2004 had a significant impact on Oak Ridge, along with much of central Florida. This Category 4 storm left substantial damage in its path, primarily from high winds. Other more recent events, such as Hurricane Irma in 2017, also affected the area. While Irma was downgraded to a Category 3 by the time it reached inland to Oak Ridge, it still produced heavy rainfall and high winds. Noteworthy floods have also come from tropical storm events and heavy rainfall, but generally, the risks from wind damage and storm surges associated with hurricanes are higher for Oak Ridge than significant freshwater flooding.
