Micanopy, Florida, located approximately 90 miles from both the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts, is somewhat protected by this inland distance from the full force of a hurricane. However, the locale is not entirely immune from the impact of such events. Major hurricanes can still make their way inland with significant strength and tropical storms also pose a potential hazard. The town is at a relatively low elevation of approximately 100 feet, making it susceptible to flooding from heavy rainfall. Historical records show that flooding has occurred due to tropical storms and hurricanes, although it is less severe and frequent than coastal communities. In the past 30 years, Micanopy, like much of North Central Florida, has been impacted by a few notable hurricanes. These include the Category 3 Hurricane Irma in September 2017, which passed into North Central Florida as a tropical storm, causing considerable damage due to heavy rain, fierce winds and causing widespread power outages. The community was also affected by Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne in 2004, both of which brought substantial rainfall and wind damage to the area. As part of preparedness, Micanopy residents should consider these historical impacts and the potential for flooding in specific sections of the town and take suitable precautions during hurricanes and tropical storm events.
