The Crossings, Florida, though somewhat sheltered due to its relative distance from the immediate coastline (about 10 miles inland), it remains vulnerable to significant impacts from hurricanes, particularly from strong winds and heavy rainfall. The town is located on a low-lying land which amasses to its flood risk during intense hurricane episodes. Heavy rainfall from powerful hurricanes or from slower-moving, lower category storms, can lead to flash flooding and more prolonged flood events. In particular, houses, infrastructure, and neighborhoods along creeks, rivers, and lakes, or in low-lying areas, may face a substantial flood risk primarily during the Atlantic hurricane season. In the past 30 years, major hurricanes such as Andrew in 1992 and Irma in 2017 have brushed or directly hit the region, leaving the local inhabitants in periods of severe distress and heavy repair need. Hurricane Andrew, in particular, was a devastating event, being a Category 5 hurricane which made landfall south of The Crossings, but brought extensive wind damage to the town. More recently, in 2017, Hurricane Irma tested the town's resilience with harsh winds and heavy rainfall that led to power outages and localized flooding. As such, the possibility of future hurricane threats and subsequent flooding should be a considerable factor in local planning and emergency preparation.
