Munson, Florida, despite being inland, is not immune to hurricanes and tropical storms given that it's situated in a state that is frequently hit by such weather patterns. Even though it's shielded to an extent from storm surge risks associated with property damage and loss of life, the town still has a significant flood risk due to heavy rainfall that may lead to swollen rivers, overflowing their banks, and inundating nearby areas. Munson's modest elevation does not provide complete protection from storm surge, especially from high category hurricanes. The Blackwater River, which flows nearby, could potentially flood causing further damage in the event of a severe storm. Perusal of the last 30 years of meteorological data reveals that Munson has been in the pathway of several notable and damaging hurricanes. The most dramatic in recent history was Hurricane Ivan in 2004, a Category 3 at landfall which resulted in significant damage and life loss. The town also suffered the effects of Hurricane Katrina the following year, albeit at a lesser degree owing mostly to heavy rain. More recently, in 2018, Hurricane Michael, a Prolific Category 5 hurricane, affected the region although it did not hit Munson directly. Each of these intense weather patterns has, to varying degrees, led to eroded infrastructure, and all underscore the need for comprehensive emergency preparedness strategies to be in place and heeded.
