About Punta Gorda.
Punta Gorda, situated on the eastern coasts of Florida, has a high risk for hurricane impacts due to its coastal position in the eye of the Atlantic Hurricane Alley. The town's relative elevation to sea level doesn't have much measurable elevation, thereby increasing its susceptibility to storm surges, particularly during high tide. The historical flood risk for Punta Gorda is substantial, with the area experiencing frequent flooding during heavy rainfall events, even outside of hurricane situations. One of the most significant hurricanes to affect the region in the past 30 years was Hurricane Charley in August 2004. Charley made landfall in Punta Gorda as a Category 4 hurricane, causing enormous damage amounting to over $15 billion and was directly responsible for 10 fatalities in the state of Florida. Other notable hurricane impacts have included Hurricane Irma in 2017, which, although it didn't make direct landfall in Punta Gorda, brought heavy rains and significant flooding to the town. Given the historical storm patterns and geographical features of the town, any preparation plans for future storms must consider the high risk of extreme winds, flooding, and storm surge impacts. Safety measures for residents would include comprehensive evacuation plans and proper fortification of properties.
