Westville, Florida, is a small town situated in Holmes County, approximately 50 miles north of the Gulf Coast. Its inland location means it's relatively buffered from the direct impact of hurricane landfall, though hurricanes moving inland can still pose significant threats. The town is vulnerable to high wind damage and power outages, which often accompany major storms. Due to the town's flat geography and elevation range between 50 and 100 feet, it is prone to flash flooding from heavy rainbands, one of the most dangerous inland effects of a hurricane. Furthermore, the structures in the area may not be able to fully withstand the impact of a strong hurricane. There are significant storms that have affected the town in the last 30 years. For instance, in 2018, the area was significantly affected by Hurricane Michael, a category 5 storm. The hurricane brought torrential rainfall, leading to severe flooding, and high-speed wind gusts, causing extensive damage to residences, businesses and infrastructure. Earlier, in 2004, Hurricane Ivan, a category 3 storm also caused similar destruction. While not as regular, significant flood events have been associated with tropical storms, emphasizing the need for flood risk awareness and preparedness. These past incidents serve as potent reminders that while Westville is somewhat insulated from coastal effects, it is not immune from damaging storms and flooding.
