Noma, Florida is located in the northwestern part of the state, inland and quite a good distance away from the Gulf of Mexico coast. Its elevated position reduces its susceptibility to floods typically instigated by storm surge associated with coastal hurricanes. However, it's still likely to be affected by heavy rain and high winds that these storms produce, leading to potential river and flash flooding, particularly during significant hurricanes. Other hurricane impacts could include property and infrastructure damage from fierce winds and falling trees, especially since the area is rich in vegetation. Within the past 30 years, Noma has seen some significant hurricane activity. The most notable of these were Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Michael in 2018. Hurricane Ivan brought strong winds and heavy downpour to the area, causing immense property damage and power outages. Similarly, Hurricane Michael, a devastating Category 5 storm, dished out a mass of rain and wind over the region resulting in extensive damage. Despite these considerable hurricanes, given its inland location and relatively higher elevation, Noma's flood risk is not as high as other Florida towns. Yet, its residents should still be prepared for possible emergencies during hurricane season.
