Brooker, Florida, situated approximately 50 miles from the coastline, is not directly exposed to the initial onslaught of a coastal hurricane. However, it is susceptible to the severe wind and deluge of rainfall associated with a hurricane or tropical storm that has made its way inland. At an elevation of around 70 feet above sea level, Brooker generally has low risk from storm surge, but significant risk from consequent flooding due to the significant rainfall often associated with hurricanes. This flood risk is further exacerbated by the town's positioning near multiple bodies of water, including the Santa Fe River, which can overflow and inundate the town in extreme weather conditions. Over the last 30 years, Brooker has seen its share of hurricane impacts, notably from Hurricane Irma in 2017 which brought heavy rainfall and flooding, leading to road closures and damage to property and infrastructure. Similarly, Hurricane Frances in 2004 caused extensive rainfall-related damage to the region. Direct hurricane impact is not common for this area due to its distance from the coast, but the residual effects of high winds and heavy rainfall can certainly pose a threat. Hence, both the structural integrity of buildings and the capacity of local drainage systems should always be taken into account when preparing the town for potential hurricane threats.
