About Pinecrest.
Pinecrest, Florida, located approximately 15 miles southwest of downtown Miami and about 6 miles from the coastline, is highly vulnerable to hurricanes and tropical storms, often facing threats from powerful winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall. The town's relatively low elevation (approximately 10 feet above sea level) and location in a low-lying coastal plain means that it's susceptible to both flooding from hurricanes and, perhaps more significantly, from heavy rains that can oversaturate ground, rivers, and canals. Hurricanes also pose the risk of wind damage and potential power outages due to extensive vegetation cover. The most notable hurricane impacts in the past 30 years include Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Irma in 2017. Hurricane Andrew, as one of the most devastating hurricanes in U.S. history, brought destructive winds that severely damaged or destroyed many homes and buildings in Pinecrest. More recently, Hurricane Irma, a Category 4 storm, also caused substantial damage due to storm surge flooding, high winds, and heavy rainfall. The dual threats of coastal and inland flooding make Pinecrest particularly vulnerable during hurricane season, requiring dedicated monitoring and preparedness efforts to ensure resident safety and protect property in this area.
