Pittman, Florida, being landlocked, might not directly feel the full brunt of a hurricane in comparison to coastal towns, but hurricanes remain a significant threat with various implications for Pittman. The effects commonly associated with hurricanes—intense winds, heavy rainfall, and tornadoes—still pose substantial risks. Hurricanes can render extensive damage to infrastructure and landscape due to wind gusts, precipitation-caused flooding, and associated tornadoes. Being in central Florida, the town is not immune to these threats, and its relative low-elevation may increase the risk of freshwater flooding in certain areas during intense precipitation events. In the past 30 years, several major hurricanes and floods have impacted Pittman, Florida. Perhaps most notably, in 2004, Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne all passed near or through Lake County carrying with them damaging winds and heavy rainfall that resulted in significant inland flooding. Aside from wind damage to structures, the flooding from these storms resulted in damage to roadways and other infrastructure, property loss, and even loss of life. Therefore, even though direct hits from hurricanes may be less common in Pittman compared to coastal regions, the risks posed by these powerful storms should not be underestimated.
