About Day.
Day, Florida, while relatively inland, is still susceptible to the impacts of hurricanes and tropical storms. Located about 45 miles from the coastline and with an elevation of around 65 feet, the community could potentially experience heavy rainfall and intense winds during powerful storm events. Given the town’s position just outside the Florida Floodplains, it has a moderate historical risk of flooding. Flooding risks are notably exacerbated during hurricane events when the capacity of nearby water bodies, including the Suwannee River, could be overwhelmed by heavy rainfall. Historically, in 2016, Hurricane Hermine notably impacted the town, causing notable flooding in Day and surrounding areas. Less than two years later, Hurricane Michael, one of the most powerful hurricanes on record to hit the Panhandle region, caused significant damage even though the storm made landfall over a hundred miles away. These instances underscore the reality that despite its distance from the coastline, Day is not immune to the devastating impacts of hurricanes and tropical storms. Local residents should remain attentive to hurricane warnings and adopt necessary measures to minimize potential harm to their lives and properties.
