About Aucilla.
Aucilla, Florida, despite its inland position, is not completely immune to the threats posed by hurricanes, especially given its proximity to both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 30 miles and 100 miles away, respectively. Factors such as distance and direction from the coast, elevation, and local geography can greatly influence the potential impacts of hurricanes on Aucilla. As it lies in a relatively low-lying region, with an average elevation of about 46 feet above sea level, precipitation during hurricane events can potentially cause flash flooding or more prolonged flooding. Moreover, as storms decay over land, they can produce severe windstorms or spawn tornadoes, causing substantial damage to property and infrastructure. Over the past 30 years, Aucilla has experienced several major hurricane and flood events. Most notably, Hurricane Hermine in 2016, the first hurricane to make landfall in Florida since Wilma in 2005, brought destructive winds and heavy rainfall, leading to considerable flooding in the region. Additionally, flooding events often coincide with hurricanes due to the associated heavy rainfall. The 2017 Hurricane Irma also significantly affected the region, notwithstanding its significant distance from the epicenter, demonstrating that even a slight path adjustment of storms can bring severe weather to the Aucilla area. Therefore, it is crucial for residents to remain ready and heed warnings in case of any future hurricane threats.
