About Lazy Lake.
Lazy Lake, Florida, located in Broward County, is at significant risk when it comes to hurricane threats due to the low elevation and its close proximity to the Atlantic coast. Even though it sits somewhat inland—approximately six miles from the nearest coastline—its low-lying elevation makes it prone to flooding from heavy rain that often accompanies hurricanes. One key vulnerability of Lazy Lake is storm surge, a phenomenon where rising seawater levels caused by a storm's winds can flood the area. Additionally, high wind speeds often associated with hurricanes can cause damage to infrastructure, particularly those that are not built to withstand such events. Over the past three decades, Lazy Lake has been directly or indirectly impacted by a number of major hurricanes and tropical storms, which have caused flooding and other damage. Most notably, Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Irma in 2017, both of which had sweeping impacts across South Florida. While Lazy Lake was spared the worst impacts of Andrew, which did the most damage in Miami-Dade County, it experienced the widespread flooding and wind damage from Irma. These past events highlight the importance of preparedness for hurricane events, particularly with potential increases in hurricane intensity and frequency due to climate change.
