About Bascom.
Bascom, Florida, located approximately 60 miles from the coast and at an elevation of 141 feet, is still susceptible to the damaging impact of hurricanes, despite being somewhat inland. While storm surge, a predominant threat to coastal areas, is not a significant concern for Bascom due to its distance from the coast, the town is at risk of detrimental effects from powerful wind gusts, heavy rainfall and flooding. Historical data places this area within the flood zone, pointing towards a heightened risk of flash flooding and river flooding, notably around the nearby Chipola River, during and after a hurricane. Over the past three decades, Bascom has faced the impact of several significant storms. Most notably, in 2018, Hurricane Michael, a devastating Category 5 hurricane, moved through the Florida Panhandle and brought powerful winds and heavy rainfall to Bascom, resulting in substantial damage. Before that, Hurricane Opal in 1995, and Hurricane Ivan in 2004, also had considerable impacts in the area, exhibiting the town's time-to-time exposure to major tropical storm systems. This historical pattern highlights the necessity for this community to adopt comprehensive hurricane preparedness measures, including the reinforcement of infrastructure against wind damage and plans for flood risk reduction.
