§ 02

About Shady Hills.

Local context for the zone
Shady Hills, Florida, while not directly on the coast, can nonetheless experience significant impact due to hurricanes, especially considering its low elevation. This inland area is no stranger to heavy rainfall associated with major storms, which comes with the potential for inland flooding. While the town may not be directly struck by the high storm surges characteristic of coastal areas during a hurricane, their vulnerability to flash floods and river overflows remain high. Also, due to its position, it's exposed to both wind damage and tornadoes spun off by hurricanes and tropical storms. In terms of infrastructure and transportation, high winds could potentially lead to destruction of buildings and downed power lines, thereby disrupting power supply and other essential services. Historically, Hurricane Irma in 2017 affected the area significantly. It was a powerful and catastrophic Category 5 hurricane, the strongest observed in the Atlantic in terms of maximum sustained winds. While it did not hit Shady Hills directly as a Category 5, the heavy rainfall it brought when it passed over this district of Pasco County led to flooding, causing considerable property damage. Prior to that, Tropical Storm Debby in 2012 caused widespread damage in this region as well due to its associated heavy rains and flooding. Looking back, it’s clear that while Shady Hills does not bear the brunt of coastal storm surges, it is no stranger to flood and wind damage from hurricanes. Residents must hence be aware and prepared for these eventualities.
