About Sunrise.
Sunrise, Florida, located approximately 10 miles inland from the Atlantic coast, is vulnerable to the impacts of tropical cyclones, but its relative distance from the coastline could offer some level of protection against landfalling hurricanes. Despite the protection offered by its inland location, the rather flat elevation of the region, coupled with the fact that much of Sunrise sits near or at sea-level, raises significant concerns regarding potential flooding from heavy rain during a hurricane event. The city's system of canals and lakes can help relieve flood conditions but these can also overflow with significant rainfall, thereby escalating the flood risk. Historically, Sunrise has been impacted by several hurricanes and major storm events. Most notably, Hurricane Andrew (1992), Wilma (2005), and Irma (2017) caused extensive wind and water damage to the area. Flooding, power outages, and damage to infrastructure were the primary impacts. Hurricane Wilma, a category 3 hurricane, was particularly damaging, causing long-lasting power outages, structural damage, and the displacement of residents. Future hurricanes could potentially bring similar or more severe consequences, therefore it is significant for residents and the local government to take proactive measures for hurricane preparedness.
