About Southwest Ranches.
Southwest Ranches, Florida has a moderate risk from hurricanes due to its South Florida location. While it's not directly situated along the coastline, its relative proximity (about 13 miles inland) to the Atlantic Ocean leaves it susceptible to the impacts of hurricanes and tropical storms, such as high winds, heavy rainfall, and potential tornadoes that spin off from these systems. Because the town sits at a relatively low elevation, roughly between 7 and 14 feet above mean sea level, it has a heightened risk of flooding, especially given the region's high water table and poor drainage. Over the last 30 years, Southwest Ranches has been impacted by several major hurricanes, the most notable being Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Hurricane Wilma in 2005, and Hurricane Irma in 2017. These major hurricanes brought not only destructive winds but also led to significant rainfall and raised the potential for floods. In Hurricane Irma’s case, extreme rainfall records were set in parts of South Florida, causing flooding in low-lying areas, demonstrating the town's vulnerability to such events. During these events, the town has also experienced frequent and long-lasting power outages as infrastructural systems are often affected by such adverse weather conditions.
