About Clewiston.
Clewiston, Florida, although situated about 65 miles inland, is not entirely immune from potential hurricane impacts. The town, located on the southwestern shore of Lake Okeechobee, is roughly at sea level which heightens the risk associated with storm surge flooding, particularly if a storm moves in from the East across the lake. While its inland location allows for some weakening of wind speeds from storms that may make landfall along the coast, the potential for torrential rain and consequent flooding remains a significant concern. Areas of Clewiston that are closer to the lake may be particularly vulnerable. Historically, Clewiston has been directly affected by major hurricanes, the most notable ones in the last 30 years being Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Andrew, a Category 5 hurricane resulted in significant damage statewide, though Clewiston being more inland was spared the worst. Wilma, however, caused extensive damage to structures in Clewiston due to high wind speeds and ensuing flooding. Moreover, Clewiston often experiences indirect impacts from hurricanes hitting elsewhere in Florida in the form of excessive rain and storms. Hence, local officials and residents need to consider hurricane and flood preparations seriously.
