About Tequesta.
Tequesta, Florida is located directly on the Atlantic coast, at sea level, which makes it very vulnerable to hurricane threats, including storm surges and coastal flooding. The close proximity to the coast offers little barrier between the community and the severe wind and flood impacts associated with hurricanes. Furthermore, the town's low elevation exacerbates these threats, and the area is historically prone to flooding even from seasonal heavy rains. During and after hurricanes, Tequesta has seen significant issues with road flooding, potentially restricting emergency response and post-disruption recovery. Major hurricanes made significant impacts in Tequesta over the past 30 years. Most notably, Hurricane Andrew struck Florida in 1992 with catastrophic consequences. More recently, the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons brought a series of storms - including Hurricanes Jeanne and Wilma - that caused significant damage due to wind and flooding throughout South Florida, including Tequesta. Hurricane Irma (2017) also greatly affected the area, causing substantial flooding and wind damage in Tequesta. It's important that residents take these threats seriously due to their past implications and future possibilities.
