About Tamarac.
Tamarac, Florida is located approximately ten miles inland from the southeastern coast of Florida. This distance from the coastline provides some protection from direct hurricane landfalls, but does not exempt the city from hurricane impacts such as strong winds, torrential rains, and potential tornadoes spawned from the parent storm. Given the generally flat topography of South Florida and its low elevation, Tamarac poses significant risk for flooding, especially due to the traditional heavy rainbands of hurricanes or tropical storms that can stall over the area. The town's drainage system is interconnected with the overall South Florida water management system which can occasionally be overwhelmed during periods of substantial rainfall, leading to water backup and flooding. Over the last thirty years, Tamarac has felt the impacts from several notable hurricanes. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew, although primarily a Miami-Dade country event, brought tropical storm force winds to the area. In 2005, Hurricane Wilma, a Category 3 storm, passed directly over Tamarac causing widespread wind damage and power outages. Most recently, Hurricane Irma in 2017 had a significant effect on the infrastructure, causing heavy rainfall, localized flooding and wind-induced damages. Historical evidence suggests that it is not just the intensity of the hurricane, but the path and speed through the area that has the greatest impact on the town's residents.
