About Winter Beach.
Winter Beach, Florida, located directly on the eastern coast of the state, is susceptible to high risks from hurricanes and flooding given its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its relatively low elevation. Its coastal location puts it directly in the path of tropical systems during hurricane season, which can result in destructive storm surges, high winds, heavy rain, and potential for significant flooding. In terms of elevation, Winter Beach is virtually at sea level, which only heightens the risk of storm surge and flooding during a hurricane. Historically, this region has seen substantial flood risk due to heavy rainfall events and storm surges. Looking back over the past 30 years, Winter Beach has experienced major hurricanes such as Andrew in 1992, Frances and Jeanne in 2004, Matthew in 2016, and Irma in 2017. Each of these storms brought damaging winds, heavy rain, and storm surge that led to substantial flooding. For instance, during Hurricane Jeanne, storm surges reached up to 6 feet causing significant damage to seaside properties. Major floods associated with these storms, particularly during Frances and Jeanne in 2004, resulted in widespread flooding that caused extensive property damage. Based on this historical data, residents of Winter Beach should remain vigilant and prepared for the potential of hurricanes and associated impacts.
