Pea Ridge, Florida, located in Santa Rosa County, is about twelve miles inland from the Gulf Coast. Although its inland location offers some degree of natural protection against direct hurricane landfalls, the town is still susceptible to indirect effects of hurricanes such as heavy rains, flooding, and high-speed winds. As the community is situated in a low-lying area with an average elevation of only about 47 feet above sea level, any severe, persistent rainfall from tropical storms and hurricanes can potentially lead to significant flood risks. Furthermore, given the low elevation, storm surges from near coast hurricanes present a significant flood risk as well, even though Pea Ridge is not directly on the coast. In recent history, some notable hurricanes have challenged Pea Ridge, providing a glimpse of how susceptible the area is to these storm impacts. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Dennis in 2005, although made landfall to the west, produced significant rainfall that led to flooding in the region. More recently, Hurricane Sally in 2020 caused localized straight-line wind damage and significant flooding in portions of Santa Rosa County. From a historical standpoint, caution and preparation are necessary to deal with not only the potential for high-speed winds during hurricane season but also flooding, which can pose arguably the greatest threat to this inland community during major tropical weather events.
