About Lely.
Lely, Florida, located in Collier County, is relatively close to the southwestern coast of the state, thereby posing a significant threat for hurricane impacts including storm surges, high winds, and torrential rainfall that can lead to widespread flooding. Given that much of Lely is at a low elevation (less than 10 feet above sea level), the risk for both coastal and inland flooding is quite high during substantial storms. Due to the area's flat topography and extensive canal system, it could be particularly susceptible to post-storm flooding as drainage often proves challenging after significant rainfall events. Historically, Lely, like much of Southwestern Florida, has been in the firing line for major hurricanes. In the last 30 years, the most notable cyclones include Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Hurricane Wilma in 2005, and Hurricane Irma in 2017. Each of these storms brought strong winds and heavy rains, causing significant damage. Particularly, after Hurricane Wilma and Irma, the area suffered considerable flooding, exemplifying the flood risk for this region. The frequency and intensity of these storms necessitate preparedness for potential evacuations, property damage, power outages, and disruptions to services in the event of a future significant storm.
