Margate, in Broward County Florida, is inland of the East Coast, about 13 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. This keeps it somewhat protected from direct landfall of hurricanes compared to coastal cities. However, the town is still within a vulnerable zone for potential hurricane impacts due to its relatively flat topography and low elevation, as well as the widespread presence of canals and bodies of water which can significantly contribute to local flooding events. Apart from its coastal proximity, Margate's exposure to hurricanes can lead to high wind damage, torrential rainfall causing flash floods, and potential power outages. Looking back over the past three decades, Margate has been affected by some powerful hurricanes. In 1992, Category 5 Hurricane Andrew, one of the most destructive hurricanes in U.S. history, caused extensive damage to South Florida. Despite Margate's inland location, the area still experienced strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall. In 2005, the city was impacted by Hurricane Wilma, a Category 3 storm, which led to severe damage due to wind and flooding. In recent years, the potential for flooding has increased due to more frequent and intense hurricanes possibly linked to climate change. Therefore, hurricane preparedness should involve assessing individual flood risk, planning for possible evacuation, and securing properties against wind damage. Every hurricane season, residents should prepare for the worst, in case a major hurricane makes landfall on the Florida coast.
